Fast food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) did not know what it was getting into when it turned to Oprah for help giving away their new chicken creation. Looking to boost their image among the healthy crowd the fried maker is looking to show their healthier side.
Oprah helped KFC by being apart of the action to give away the new grilled chicken food product. Every person who went the unfried chicken web site could print out a coupon that supposedly would allow any person to get free grilled chicken. The apparent response of this promotion is a slam dunk and personal foul.
KFC was not able to handle the massive request that came in from this promotion. So instead of getting a chance to try KFC’s new grilled chicken many freebie food hunters were turned away.
Instead they were given another coupon voucher that would allow them to get free grilled chicken at a later date when supplies of grilled chicken are replenished. This left patrons hoping to be among the first to try a healthy grilled chicken product very disappointed.
Now stepping back one has to reason the marketing campaign is very smart here. You mix two things people want. Free and Healthier. Most people are low on cash or worried about their future incomes and tired of eating food that is bad for you.
The problem was using Oprah. Basically KFC got what it was asking for and much more than it could possibly handle.
